Traditional Tales

On Friday, the Meerkats all did an AMAZING job inventing their own version of the tale of The Lion and the Mouse. Their problem sections were extremely scary, but they all thought of a way to solve it and end their story happily. This week we will be publishing our new and improved versions of the story as a book which we are all very excited about!

Here are some of the children’s stories, starting with the ‘Oh no, There’s a Problem’. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did…

Olivia
Without warning the prairie dog heard a horrifying trumpet echo across the Savannah. Just then the prairie dog remembered his promise. Before going to the elephant he collected some things he might need. When he got there the elephant was surrounded by hunters with bows and arrows, cutlasses and more. The hunters wanted ivory to take to the Ivory Coast.
The things he collected were very useful now…A ARMY OF PRAIRIE DOGS! The prairie dogs broke everything but left one and hid it and made it dusty so the hunters ran away. The prairies felt incredibly proud.
The elephant and the prairie dog were friends forever and the closest of friends.

Scarlet
AARR! Without warning the spotty jaguar screamed in fear. Just at that moment the colourful lilac breasted roller remembered his promise. As quick as a flash he flew to the echoing scream and he saw the jaguar trapped under a hunters net. The jaguar was so frightened and his heart was pumping faster than ever while his body was shaking with fear.
Bravely he grabbed the net and pulled it up with all his might while the jaguar was looking out for hunters. When the lilac breasted roller had pulled the net up the jaguar whispered all the hunters over there. Then the lilac breasted roller flew to the hunter while holding the net and he dropped the net on the hunter.
Finally they ran away in so much laughter while the lilac flew and the jaguar pounced along behind him.

Billy
A few days later the meerkat was taking a walk when suddenly he heard an incredibly loud and enormous scream echo across the Savannah. As quick as lightening he remembered his promise and raced like an F1 car. Suddenly he ran into the trip and slipped his feet out. Then he broke the net.

The Lion and the Mouse

In literacy, we are developing our story writing skills by innovating a traditional tale. Last week we re-told the tale of The Lion and the Mouse. We explored its structure and language features in detail, and now we are ready to createour own version of the famous tale! We have each chosen 2 safari animals to become the main characters in our story, and have created some of our own plot events. Here are some pictures of our role-play as the Lion and the Mouse from last week. Can you tell which part of the story we are showing? How are you going to change the events to fit with your original story this week? Can you describe how the characters are feeling?

Zoo Lab!

This Monday, all of KS1 received a visit from Zoo Lab linked to our ‘On Safari’ topic. We have researched minibeasts in lots of detail, so we were very excited when we learned we would get the opportunity to see some exotic mini-beasts up close…and even get to hold some of them!

Here are some pictures of our exciting session. The mini-beasts we saw were a tarantula and a scorpion. Then we had the chance to hold a giant African millipede, a Madagascar cockroach and a snake!

The children were EXTREMELY brave (much more brave than me…I could only hold them for a couple of seconds!)

Well done Safari Rangers :]

Sports Day!

This morning, Meerkats took part in the Year 1, 2 and 3 sports day and I must say how very impressed I was with each and every one of them. The children all worked well as a team, listened carefully to adults and showed off their fantastic sporting abilities! Well done marvellous Meerkats. I think we may well have some future Olympians in our class…
